Security cover thrown over K'taka

Bangalore, Aug 14 (UNI) Elaborate security arrangements have been made across Karnataka to ensure that the country's 60th Independence Day celebrations passed off peacefully tomorrow.

Speaking to UNI, Inspector General and Director General of Police B S Sial said tight security arrangements were in place in all districts and vigilance stepped up. Additional security forces had been deployed at all vital installations, religious places, major state and central offices and sensitive areas.

He said security had been tightened at the Bangalore Airport, railway stations and other important places. Besides, special checkposts had also been put up at all key entry and exit points of the state, he added.

When contacted, City Police Commissioner N Achutha Rao informed that all security measures had been taken at the Field Marshal Manek Shaw Parade Grounds, where Independence Day celebrations would be held tomorrow. Special security cover had been thrown over the grounds to ensure peaceful conduct of the function.

Security had also been stepped up at multiplexes, shopping shopping malls, IT parks and the electronic city, where most of the IT companies were located. All vehicles entering and leaving the city were being checked.

He said Karnataka State Reserve Police personnel had been pressed into service in the city in addition to the regular security forces.

Meanwhile, in view of the alert sounded, the Railway Protection Force had also beefed up security at important railway stations like Bangalore city, Yesvantpur and Bangalore Cantonemnt in coordination with the GRP by implementing checking/frisking of passengers and their luggage.

A South Western Railway release here said one company of armed Railway Special Force had been deployed at the entry and exit points of stations. Special Force staff were posted for patroling platforms, circulating area, waiting rooms and reservation offices.

Additional Special Railway Police had also been put on duty at the railway stations to carryout round-the-clock vigil, the release added.
