Flood situation alarming in AP

Hyderabad, Aug 14 (UNI) The flood situation in the Krishna basin continues to be grim tonight as the river and its tributaries are in spate in the wake of heavy discharge from the upper riparian states of Maharashtra and Karnataka.

A flood alert was sounded as the Tungabhadra was flowing above the danger mark in the temple town of Mantralayam, the abode of Saint Raghavendra. The discharge was stepped upto 2.05 lakh cusecs following heavy inflows from Karnataka, irrigation officials said.

For the first time in eight years, the authorities lifted all the 12 gates to let out a huge six lakh cusecs from Srisailam reservoir, which had an inflow of 7.06 lakhs taking the level to 877.50 ft.

The discharge from Nagarjunasagar was stepped up to 5.55 lakh cusecs anticipating more inflow from the upper riparian states.

As 5.30 lakh cusecs was realised at the Prakasam Barrage, the authorities let out 5.14 lakh cusecs into the sea after diverting 7,333 cusecs into the Eastern Main Canal, 8216 cusecs into the Western Main Canal and 400 into the Guntur channel.
