Delhi turns into fortress on Independence Day eve

New Delhi, Aug 14 (UNI) Sharpshooters took position on important government buildings, the borders were virtually sealed and tens of thousands of security personnel fanned across the capital as vigil against terrorists was stepped up to unprecedented level on the eve of the 60th Independence Day today.

Officials said they were taking no chances in view of the heightened threat of terrorist strikes. Delhi resembled a fortress with policemen standing guard at all important roads and heavy force deployment at vital installations.

The Red Fort, from where Dr Manmohan Singh would make his third Independence Day speech as Prime Minister tomorrow, was sanitised and put under layers of security cover.

The air space in and around the area would be a 'no-fly zone' from early morning to the conclusion of the Independence Day function, Delhi police said. Train movement between Delhi Junction and Shahdara station would remain suspended for the period.

Restrictions were put in place from today itself with commercial and transport vehicle movement from neighbouring states being regulated on the borders.

Delhi police has announced alternative traffic plan around the Red Fort for tomorrow.

Delhi Metro would function as usual, but with increased security details already put in place. Strict watch was being mounted at the airport as well.
