New Delhi, Aug 13 (UNI) Class XII toppers from 21 Higher Secondary Boards across the country have joined BITS Pilani this year under the scheme of direct admission.

''Every year, BITS has been attracting toppers from more than 15 boards. This year, toppers from the All India Board of CBSE and ISCE also opted to join BITS,'' said Prof Raghurama, Dean of Admissions and Placement.

The Institute admitted 1,400 students this year for its campuses at Pilani and Goa on the basis of performance in an online examination called BITSAT conducted in 15 centres across the country.

The candidates applying for BITS admissions need to score 80 per cent aggregate in physics, chemistry and mathematics with at least 60 per cent marks in each of these subjects in their 10+2 examination.

This year, 53,842 students appeared in BITSAT as against 48,235 last year, Prof Raghurama said.

''The overall performance of the aspirants in BITSAT is better this year thereby increasing the competition. The cut-off BITSAT score for admissions is 283 this year as against 245 of last year,'' he said.
