ONGC coasts to victory over Western Rly
Chennai, Aug 12 (UNI) ONGC Dehradun, who were locked at 72 all at the end of regulation time in a semifinal encounter with Western Railway coasted to a well deserved victory at the 28th All India ABC-L&T Basketball Tournament for Magnolia Trophy held here.
Western Railway started on a brisk note with Trideep Rai giving a lead to his team and at the end of the first period Western Railway led 19-14.
The second period saw both the teams trying to gain supremacy over the other and the difference was never more than two points. At half time, Western Railway led 34-31. The third period was dominated by ONGC's Sridhar and Western Railway's Riyazuddin.
A spirited ONGC kept the opponents at bay and at the end of the third period, Western Railway led by two points 50-48. At the end of the fourth period, Deshraj's three pointer and a free throw levelled the score at 72 all.
The extra period ONGC converted six free throws successfully out of the 12 points scored and emerged winners 84-78 and entered the finals.
In a earlier semifinal match, Karnataka had no answer to the fast pace set up by IOB who scored a comfortable victory.
