Bastar flood kills 11, Rs 300 cr property damaged

Jagdalpur, Aug 13 (UNI) Eleven persons have been killed and Rs 300 crore worth of property damaged by recent flooding in Chhattisgarh's south Bastar area.

''As many as 108 villages were affected by the August 4-5 flood in Dantewada district's Konta, Sukma and Bhopalpatnam rendering about 5,000 families homeless. The flooding affected 96,333 persons,'' said Collector K R Pisda.

A whopping 25,000 metric tonnes of foodgrain, besides jewellery and items of daily use, were swept away. Maximum damage was sustained by Konta and Sukma tehsils where 3,500 animals perished and 4,250 hectares of standing crop damaged. Besides 80 km of a national highway, eight bridges and 125 government buildings were damaged.

''Fifteen canals, 279 wells, 216 handpumps, 60 powerpoles and the Sukma-Konta telephone line was damaged. The situation is normal now and compensation is being doled out,'' the official added.
