Policemen donate day's salary for flood victims

Hyderabad, Aug 12 (UNI) The Andhra police have decided to donate a day's salary towards the Chief Minister's Relief Fund.

In wake of national calamity of such a magnitude, the DGP felt that it was responsibility of every citizen, more so of the uniformed force, to contribute from their earnings to help those who were in distress due to floods to major rivers in the state, an official release said.

The A P police Officer's Association office bearers led by its President, Mr V Anantaramulu, who met the DGP, accepted the proposal put forth by the latter.

The DGP also appreciated all those police personnel who took active part in rescue and rehabilitation works in the flood-hit areas.

The state police have evacuated as many as 25,000 people from low-lying areas situated all along swelling river Godavari to safer places in Khammam district alone, besides saving 15 people's precious lives in the worst flood-hit north coastal district of Vizianagaram and Srikakulam.

He also commended the police role in rescuing a pregnant woman with the help of a helicopter the other day from a marooned village.

Meanwhile, Andhra Bank Cahairman and Managing Director K Rama Krishna handed over a draft of Rs 25 lakh to Chief Minister, Y S Rajasekhar Reddy for the Relief Fund to meet the immediate requirements of rehabilitation works in the districts.
