Mulayam reminiscences Emergency

Lucknow, Aug 12 (UNI) Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mulayam Singh Yadav and Samajwadi Party supremo Mulayam Singh today reminiscenced about the Emergency and the role of media during the ''repressive'' period.

''During this 'dangerous' phase, all the newspapers had come under considerable pressure in their mission to report truth. But, the Indian Express Group publications founded by Late Ramnath Goenka was regarded by the people for its object and sharp news,'' Mr Yadav observed.

The CM claimed Mr Goenka also had to suffer harrasment and economic hardships as a consequence, but he did not surrender his values and principles.

''Indian Express newspaper endeared itself among the people during Emergency for its objective and comprehensive news reporting,'' Mr Yadav added.

Earlier, he inaugurated a state-of-art printing facility of the Lucknow edition of Indian Express.

Indian Express Editor-in-Chief Shekhar Gupta and Lucknow edition resident editor Darshan Desai welcomed the CM and SP general secretary and UP Development Council chairperson Amar Singh.

The press is part of the Group's ongoing Rs 100 crore investment exercise, which includes a significant upgrade in technology and editorial facilities.

''All our strategic plans have the interest of the reader at the core. This amibitious plan of upgradition of technology is just part of a bigger mission of empowering India,'' Mr Gupta underlined.
