Flood situation improves in M'wada, toll at 56

Aurangabad (Maharashtra), Aug 12: The death toll in rain-related incidents in Marathwada region of Central Maharashtra has reached 56, following three more deaths reported in the last eight hours, sources said here today.

Continuous respite from the incessant rains for the last few days has improved the flood situation in the region, with water level in the flood-affected areas declining considerably today.

According to information available at the divisional commissionerate here, Nanded was the worst affected district in the region, topping the list of casualties by registering 14 deaths in the last six days. It was followed by Aurangabad 13, Jalna 12, Parbhani eight, Beed and Latur four each and Osmanabad one.

The moderate improvement in flood situation also reduced the number of people residing in the relief camps. As compared to yesterday's total of 19,196 families in these camps, there are 18,771 families today.

A cash assistance of Rs 38 lakh to the next of the kin of the flood victims in the region have been distributed by the authorities till date. Food grains and kerosene has also been distributed to those who have left the camps, sources added.
