Six policemen sentenced to life imprisonment

Villupuram (Tamil Nadu), Aug 11: A local court today convicted and sentenced six policemen to life imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs 25,000 on each for abducting and raping a girl.

District Court Judge N Ratinarajan, delivering the judgement said the policemen should undergo an additional one year imprisonment and each of them must pay a fine of Rs 1000 as per the SC-ST Act, since the victim belonged to Irular community.

Those sentenced were Sub Inspector Nallam Krishna Rai Babu, Additional Sub Inspector V Raja Ram, Head Constables J Padmanabhan, K Munnasamy, G Subbarayan and K Sasi Kumar Nair, all belonging to Pondicherry Police circle.

Meanwhile, reporters, who came to cover the proceedings resorted to a road roko agitation in front of the court in protest against the rude behaviour of the police towards them and the lensmen when they tried to shoot pictures of the convicted policemen.
