Sensex stabilises above 11k ; touches 11,192.46
Mumbai, Aug 11: The BSE sensitive index stabilised above the 11k mark for the week as it closed at 11,192.46 which is 43.29 points above the previous close of 11,149.17.
The Sensex witnessed extreme volatility, and at one point in the early trade it went down by 80 points, after opening 32 points in the green. The US Embassy's travel guidelines to its citizens advocating to stay clear of New Delhi and Mumbai due to possible terror attacks between August 11 to August 15 also weighed on the Sensex, leading to a moderate closing.
The Sensex swung 271 points touching a high of 11,241 and a low of 11,069 points in the intra-day trading today.
Similarly the S&P CNX Nifty too gained 14.25 points or 0.4 per cent to close at 3,274.35.
Major sectoral indices on the BSE except Banking and the FMCG sectors were all in the green. The Banking index went down by 1.08 per cent whereas the FMCG sector was down by 0.34 per cent at 1918.48 points.
Indices that gained on the BSE were midcap up by 1.24 per cent to 4617.42, smallcap up by 1.99 per cent to 5596.61, consumer durables up by 2.28 per cent to 2965.65 points, IT by 1.14 per cent to 4139.27 points and Oil&Gas by 2.28 per cent to 5204.47 points.
Major gainers on the BSE Sensex 30 were Hero Honda up by 3.38 per cent to Rs 696.15, Reliance up by 3.17 per cent to 1011.10, NTPC up by 2.59 to Rs 124.55, Infosys up by 2.02 per cent to Rs 1742.25, Grasim up by 1.93 per cent to Rs 2191.90, Cipla up by Rs 1.84 to Rs 241.25, Tata steel up by 1.72 per cent to Rs 524.90, Bajaj Auto up by 0.85 per cent to Rs 2057.65, Reliance Energy up by 0.74 per cent to Rs 474.00 and ACC up by 0.66 per cent to Rs 880.70.
Major Losers on the index were - ICICI down by 2.80 per cent to Rs 584.50, Wipro down by 1.75 per cent to Rs 506.55, Reliance Communications down by 1.48 per cent to Rs 279.60, Bharti Airtel down by 1.21 per cent to Rs 404.25, Hindalco down by 0.99 per cent to Rs 165.80, HDFC down by 0.92 per cent to Rs 1264.45, BHEl down by 0.80 per cent to Rs 2152.95, HLL down by 0.42 per cent to Rs 222.95, ITC down by 0.34 per cent to Rs 175.60, and L&T down by 0.32 per cent to Rs 2209.70.
The breadth in the broader market was in favour of 1700 advances as against 746 declines and 65 unchanged out of total 2511 scrips that traded on the BSE counter today.
