Security tightened in Dhaka, 7 terrorists arrested

Dhaka, Aug 11: Security has been tightened at the Zia International Airport and diplomatic enclaves here following an abortive terrorist attempt to blow up US-bound planes in UK.

Security has also been put on alert following the US caution to its citizens in India of possible attacks on airports and offices in New Delhi and Mumbai in next 48 hours.

Dhaka Metropolitan Police Commissioner SM Mizanur Rahman said they have taken measures following the foiled attempt in Britain.

He said extra security measures have also been put in force in the diplomatic enclaves of Baridhara and Gulshan in the capital.

''Stop and search has been increased and intelligence vigilance strengthened to avert any untoward incident,'' UNB news agency quoted DMP chief as having said today.

Meanwhile, the police arrested seven terrorists including a top leader of Hijbut Tauhid in the country's southeastern port city of Chittagong on in the last two days.

Police said the arrested ultras were preparing to launch another attack on August 17 in Chittagong like the serial bombings staged by banned Islamic outfit JMB on the same day last year across Bangladesh.

Engineer Abdul Hamid, 45, an official of Chittagong Urea Fertilizer Limited introduced him as Amir of Chittagong unit Hijbut Tauhid during the police interrogation.

They confessed that earlier they were members of the JMB, and now they are trying to regroup themselves under the banner of Hijbut Tauhid.

Chittagong Metropolitan Police Commissioner M Majedul Haq told newspersons that they got important information about the militants as well as their plans for destructive activities during the interrogation.
