Security beefed up in Jammu, troops on high alert

Jammu, Aug 11 (UNI) Security arrangements at all vital establishments here, including airport, railway station and religious places, has been tightened on the eve of Independence Day.

Inspector General of Police S P Vaid said here today that security forces were on high alert to thwart any attempt by militants on the eve of Independence Day and Janmashtami which fall on August 15 and 16 respectively.

Mr Vaid said that they had received intelligence inputs that militants might strike and disrupt law and order situation in the state.

''But we would not provide any room for these anti-social and anti-national elements,'' he added.

He said, ''Extra troops had been deployed at key installations in Jammu region. All vehicles entering the winter capital will be thoroughly searched at different check posts. Dog squads have also been pressed into service.'' Multi-tier security ring has been formed at all strategic points to thwart the nefarious designs of militants.

All agencies responsible for the security at the railway station have deployed more personnel in civilian clothes to keep a vigil on every visitor.

Police and the army has been requested to increase patrolling from Lakhanpur to Udhampur.

Inspector General of crime and railways Dilbagh Singh and SSP Sunil Sharma also reviewed the security arrangements.

''Several measures, including close circuit cameras, are being used to ensure fool-proof security at railway station and on the tracks,'' Mr Singh told reporters.

Five dog squads trained by the Border Security Force have been deployed to check the luggages of the visitors at platforms and also search the trains, he added.
