Rumour grips Anand
Anand, Aug 11 (UNI) The town was gripped by rumours today that fresh floods had lashed Surat and could threaten the city as well.
The administration had to move in quickly to scotch the rumours by sending rickshaws fitted with loudspeakers, especially in the low-lying areas, saying that there was no threat to the town as it is 20 km away from the Mahisagar river. There were rumours too that the highway had been closed. However, two bridges, one connecting Anand-Vadodara and the other Anand-Jambusar were were closed today.
With 13 inches of rain from the overnight downpour continuing until 1800 hrs today and with over 74,000 persons in 26 villages having been evacuated, the people here are in constant fear that soon led to spurt in panic once the rumours gained ground.
Meanwhile Army too is in Anand, aiding the civil authorities.
