Govt takes measures to increase khadi production
New Delhi, Aug 11 (UNI) The government is coordinating efforts by handloom and powerloom units to increase the production of khadi, Minister for Agro and Rural Industries Mahabir Prasad said today.
At the same time, a scheme of fund for regeneration of traditional industries has been approved for development of 25 khadi clusters over five years beginning 2005-06, he told the Rajya Sabha during Question Hour.
Mr Prasad said competition from organised textiles sector is a major challenge for khadi products. Paucity of working capital, inconsistent quality of products, marketing constraints and technological obsolescence of production equipment are some other challenges facing the khadi institutions.
But the Khadi and Village Industries Commission (KVIC) has been implementing various schemes to reverse downfall in production of khadi, he added.
