Floods in Krishna alarming, as PM arrives for survey
Hyderabad, Aug 11: Even as Prime Minister Manmohan Singh arrived here today for an aerial survey of flood-affected areas of Andhra Pradesh and Maharashtra, the flood situation continued to be alarming in the Krishna delta, while the level was slowly coming down in the river Godavari.
Anticipating more floods from the upper riparian state of Karnataka with Krishna tributary, Bheema in spate, 5.19 lakh cusecs of water was discharged from Prakasam Barrage at 1100 hrs with the level going up to 14 ft, Disaster Management Commissioner Debabratha Kanta told UNI.
More than 10,000 people were evacuated to relief camps in the Krishna delta region as more floods were likely from Karnataka, he said. A huge 5.41 lakh cusecs and 5.79 lakh cusecs of water was discharged from Srisailam and Nagarjunsagar respectively .
The level in Godavari came down to 51 ft, one ft below the third danger level, at the temple town of Bhadrachalam and to 16.30 ft in the Dowleswaram Barrage with the outflow reduced to 15.85 lakh cusecs from the peak 28 lakh cusecs.
''However, it will take at least two to four days for the flood waters to recede from the hundreds of marooned villages in the Godavari delta region,'' he added.
