DMK member demands development of Vellore airport

New Delhi, Aug 11 (UNI) A DMK member from Tamil Nadu today urged the Centre to develop the Vellore airport, besides promoting the Vellore fort as a heritage destination among international tourists.

Making a mention in the Lok Sabha, Prof K M Kader Mohideen regretted that the Vellore airport ''still remains a forgotten project''.

In this context, he said many people were visiting Vellore for treatment at the internationally-reputed CMC Hospital and the Medical College and also to the Vellore Institute of Technology. The flourishing leather industry at Vellore fetched more than Rs 6000 crore foreign exchange every year.

The airport is also situated in the centrally-located place between Bangalore and Chittoor.

Pointing out that the 1806 Sepoy Mutiny began from the Vellore fort, he said there was huge scope to include the fort in the world map of tourism.

The development of the Vellore airport would definitely attract more foreign tourists to visit the historic fort there, he said.
