Stern action against those behind extra cost: CM

Chennai, Aug 9 (UNI) Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi told the Assembly today that stern action will be taken against those responsible for the extra expenditure of Rs 295.21 crore incurred on the New Veeranam Project during the previous AIADMK regime.

Replying to a point of order raised by Mr C Gnanasekaran (Cong) on the CAG report in this regard, he said the Government would initiate steps after verifying the report. If it was true, stern action would be taken against those responsible for the cost overrun, he added.

On demands from leaders of various legislature parties that a Commission of Inquiry should be constituted to go into the issue, he said the views expressed by the leaders were themselves akin to the findings of an Inquiry Commission.

The Government would decide on future action after due consideration, he added.

Earlier, Mr Gnanasekaran said people were shocked at the CAG findings that the AIADMK Government had incurred additional expense due to delay in finalisation of tenders and commencement of work.

He urged the Government to take action against those responsible for the cost overrun.
