Group clash: 96 held, prohibitory orders clamped

Gadag, Aug 9: Police have arrested as many as 96 people in connection with yesterday's clash between caste hindus and dalits at Halakere village in this district of Karnataka during which several houses were set on fire.

The situation in the village was now peaceful and under control.

The two groups had clashed over a petty quarrel in an arrack shop in the village.

Of the 35 people injured in the clash, four people had been admitted to the Karnataka Institute of Medical Sciences here.

Prohibitory orders under section 144 CrPC had been clamped in the village till August 11 and district armed police platoons deployedto avoid any untoward incident.

Senior police officials, including the Superintendent of Police, were camping in the village.
