Chennai, Aug 9 (UNI) The main Opposition AIADMK staged a walkout in the Tamil Nadu Assembly today after Speaker R Avudaiyappan denied permission to raise a privilege issue against Revenue Minister I Periyasamy for remarks against AIADMK General Secretary J Jayalalithaa.

During zero hour, Deputy Leader of the Opposition O Panneerselvam sought the Speaker's permission to raise the privilege issue against Mr Periyasamy, who had remarked during his reply to the demand for grants for his department yesterday, that Ms Jayalalithaa had spent Rs 100 crore on the marriage of her erstwhile foster son.

He said the Minister's statement was totally irrelevant and had been deliberately made to breach the privilege of Ms Jayalalithaa, who was Leader of the Opposition.

The Minister had violated the oath taken by him that he would be unbiased and would function without yielding to personal likes and dislikes, he added.

AIADMK Whip K A Sengottaiyan also raised the issue, contending that the Minister had made comment on a private matter that had occurred outside the House. Though AIADMK members requested the Speaker to expunge the remarks, the plea was turned down. Hence, a privilege notice was given under Assembly Rule 220, he said.

The Speaker ruled that the Minister had not made any statement that was offensive or derogatory and denied permission to the AIADMK members to raise a privilege issue.

Protesting, the AIADMK members shouted slogans against the Speaker and staged a walkout.
