Rains cause wall collapse, short-circuits in Mumbai

Mumbai, Aug 8 (UNI) Even as rain Gods rested for a while today after three days of continuous downpour, seven incidents of wall collapse and short circuit were reported in the metropolis during the last 24 hours.

Police here said a wall of Kanti Bhawan at Bhendi Bazar in South Central Mumbai collapsed at around 1712 hrs yesterday, while a wall of George Vitisa House at Bandra also caved in last evening.

Besides, five huts were damaged when a tree fell on them in Indira Nagar area of Powai in North east Mumbai.

An incident each of short-circuit was reported at Bhandup, Cotton Green, Ghatkopar and Kalachowki areas, though there was no casaulty, police said.

The meteorological department has forecast heavy to very heavy rainfall in the metropolis and its suburbs during the next 24 hours. Colaba and Santacruz have recorded 69.9 mm and 145.9 mm rainfall, respectively during the last 24 hours ended at 0830 hours today.

Meanwhile, the harbour and main line local train services of Central railway were running about 10 minutes behind schedule, while those on Western rail route were running on time, railway control room said.
