Modi urges railways for special relief trains

Ahmedabad, Aug 8 (UNI) Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi has urged the Railway Ministry to arrange special relief trains so as to send water pouches and food packets from Ahmedabad and Mumbai to the lakhs of worst flood-affected people in Surat district and those on the northern and southern banks of Tapi river.

Mr Modi has also called upon the rich people of Gujarat and Mumbai to come to the aid of flood-affected people of Surat district. The calamity that the people of Surat are facing is first of its kind in the history of Gujarat, Mr Modi said. In view of the gravity of the situation, the state government had requisitioned the army and geared up the state machinery to meet any eventuality, he said.

The Raksha Bandhan programme at Mr Modi's residence in Gandhinagar and another in Maninagar at Ramakrishna Hall has also been cancelled by the Chief Minister, says an official release.
