Kolkata, Aug 8 (UNI) Jadavpur University (JU) has won the H-P Technology for Teaching Grant for the Asia-Pacific Region.

The grant includes hardware like Tablet PCs, external storage and optical drives, wireless networking equipment among others worth 70,000 dollars, and another 15,000 dollars in stipend for staff.

JU is one among five universities in the Asia-Pacific region and one of two in India to be chosen for the grant -- the other being Anna University, Chennai.

JU's School of Mobile Computing&Communication (SMCC), which received the grant, would be using it to set up a Mobile Learning Centre (MLC) for its newly introduced M.Tech course in distributed and mobile computing, sources said.

The MLC would integrate classroom teaching with accessing reference material from the university's digital library, conducting experiments in the state-of-the-art wireless laboratory, and submitting project reports.

'' This will help lower the barriers between teaching and working in the laboratory, '' said Pradip K Das, director of SMCC.

The use of animations and video-clips within the classroom were also part of the proposal submitted to the International Society for Technology for Education, the jury for the grant.

H-P had earlier signed an MoU with JU in November 2005 for technical collaboration in the field of mobile computing.

The company has also implemented the digital library project for the university.
