Floods cause extensive damages in Yanam

Pondicherry, Aug 8 (UNI) Pondicherry Tourism Minister Malladi Krishna Rao today said the floods in river Godavari had caused extensive damage in Yanam region of the union territory.

Mr Krishna Rao, who is camping in Yanam and supervising the relief operations said in a statement faxed from the region, that 20 KG free rice was distributed to about 12,000 families in the region.

Food packets were being distributed to the 1,200 persons evacuated from the region and accommodated in the community halls and schools.

All educational institutions in the region remained closed for two days from yesterday, he added.

He said several cattles were missing and roads and buildings were damaged and heavy loss to fishermen boats and other fishing materials were also reported. Special control rooms were opened and relief works were undertaken on a war-footing, he added.
