Vijayawada, Aug 8 (UNI) The All India Kishan Sabha (AIKS) today demanded that the army and naval forces should carry out operations on a war-footing to rescue flood-affected people in ten districts of Andhra Pradesh.

Addressing a press conference here, AIKS Vice-President Kolli Nageswara Rao said with Chief Minister Y S Rajasekhara Reddy, speaking to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh yesterday, seeking the assistance of the army personnel, deployment of armed forces to rescue marooned people was necessary in view of grim flood situation in the state.

He said in the wake of heavy rains for the past one week Penuganga, Godavari, Krishna and Nagavali rivers were in spate and water from the rivers had entered the habitations in Adilabad, Karimnagar, Warangal, Khammam, Srikakulam, Vizianagaram, Visakhapatnam, Krishna, Guntur and Nalgonda districts.

The AIKS leader claimed that due to a breach on an embankment in Gowthami, a part of Godavari river, Konaseema area in East Godavari district was under water leading to inundation of hundreds of villages and thousands of houses.

Lives of lakhs of people affected in the East Godavri district following floods were in danger, he pointed out.
