Army Chief reviews anti-insurgency preparedness in NE
Kolkata, Aug 8 (UNI) Army Chief General J J Singh today reviewed the ''operational situation in the North East'' following increased militant activities in several states.
Defence sources here said Gen Singh on his arrival at Imphal on the first leg of his two-day visit to the Northeast also congratulated the officers and jawans for their laudable efforts to keep insurgency under check and creating a conducive environment for the civil administration to function effectively.
He, however, stressed on the need for the Army personnel to maintain friendly relation with the local population even during anti-insurgency operation.
Later, the Chief of the Army Staff inaugurated a model village at Thingat in Churachandpur district, about 60 km from Imphal, where several modern amenities were extended to the villagers in the remote region of Manipur.
The village had been remodelled by the Army with full support from the local population.
Among other facilities solar lighting for roads, a 10-bed hospital, a children park and a water harvesting and sewerage scheme had been introduced at Thingat village, the sources informed.
