Vijaypath Singhania resigns from RWITC
Mumbai, Aug 7 (UNI) Mumbai Sheriff Dr Vijaypath Singhania, whose proposal to utilise the race course grounds at Mahalaxmi for public use generated considerable controversy, has resigned from the committee and management of Royal Western India Turf Club (RWITC).
In a statement here, Dr Singhania clarified that he did not propose to have a hotel built on this property nor did he propose to have the property sold to any private developer. ''I do not wish to see the race course become a concrete jungle.
I have no personal interest, financial or otherwise in this proposal,'' he added.
Dr Singhania said he did propose to make beautiful public parks on this property and he also proposed making a single tower, (preferably the world's tallest, at this location.
He said as far as the interests of members and and racing were concerned, he believed that racing can continue undisturbed at Pune and that with the government's concurrence, it should be possible to have a good club house for members at Mahalaxmi.
''However, my proposal may appear to be against the immediate and short term interests of some members,'' he said.
He said he was resigning from the management and committee of RWITC because he could not give up his personal convictions as both the current sheriff and a citizen of Mumbai.
