Thermal plants, distilleries top pulluting industries list

New Delhi, Aug 7 (UNI) Thermal power plants have turned out to be the main polluters of air, and distilleries of the water among pollution causing industries.

As much as 80 per cent of air pollution in terms of particulate matter and 89 per cent in terms of sulphur dioxide is caused by thermal power plants, Minister for Environment and Forests A Raja told the Lok Sabha today in a written reply.

He said sugar mills, cement and steel plants and oil refineries also contribute substantially in the pollution.

In water pollution, major share goes to distilleries (28 per cent), followed by textiles (26 per cent) and engineering (15 per cent).

The Minister said that so far, 329 polluting industrial units had been closed down and action against 380 had been taken for not complying with pollution reduction norms.

Out of 2672 highly polluting industries identifies under 17 categories, only 1963 have installed necessary pollution control facilities.

He said the government would soon strengthen the network of air and water quality monitoring stations and carry out assessment of pollution load and source apportionment studies.

Besides, the government is laying great emphais on promotion of clean technologies, he added.

As a result of various mesaures, the industrial pollution in terms of particulate matter has decreased 5400 tones per day from three lakh tonnes per day and water pollution in yeerms of the bio-chemical oxygen demand to 1700 tonnes per day from 9500 tonnes per day, the Minister said.
