Surat on high alert as water inflow increases in Tapi river
Surat, Aug 7 (UNI) A high alert has been declared in Surat city and many talukas as more water inflow to Tapi will worsen the situation by 1700 hrs today, district flood control room sources informed.
Around seven lakh cusecs water was released into the Tapi river today and its impact can be experienced only by evening, sources said.
''The situation will be more serious than the flood which affected the city in 1998,'' sources informed.
Relief camps are opened in many parts of the city and food packets and water will be made available in the camps.
The flood alert has created a panic in the city and people were found shopping groceries in large numbers.
