Prisoner dies in hospital

Kozhikode, Aug 7 (UNI) A remand prisoner undergoing treatment at a hospital here died today.

Police said Rajan (38), arrested in connection with an Excise case, died while being shifted to the district mental hospital in the morning.

A resident of Kunnamangalam in the district, Rajan, who was arrested a few days ago, was undergoing treatment at the General Hospital which referred him to the mental hospital after he became violent and showed symptoms of mental illness, police said.

Announcing Rs 10,000 aid to the next of kin of the deceased, District Collector A Jayathilak ordered an inquiry after an irate mob gathered in front of the hospital demanding action against the culprits.
