Activists demand classical language status to Kannada
Mysore, Aug 7 (UNI) About 100 Kannada activists, led by litterateurs and intellectuals, staged a dharna in front of the Central Institute of Indian Languages here today demanding classical language status to Kannada and implementation of the Mahajan Committee report.
The activists locked the main gates of the Institute for nearly two hours. They raised slogans against the Central Government, MPs from the state and bureaucrats for 'disregarding Kannada language' which had a rich history.
The activists said they would resort to road blockades in the city, if the Centre failed to respond to their demands.
Former Mysore University Vice Chancellor D Javare Gowda and writers Dr H J Lakkappa, Dr C P Krishna Kumar, Dr M Akbar Ali, Dr B N Chandraiah and Prof G T Narayana Rao were among others who took part in the protest.
