52 dead, two missing, over 1 lakh evacuated in Maharashtra

Mumbai, Aug 7 (UNI) At least 52 people died in rain-related incidents in various parts of Maharashtra, while two persons are still missing and over one lakh people have been evacuated due to incessant rainfall.

Release of several lakh cusecs of water from various dams affected 11 districts, 79 talukas and 643 villages.

Briefing reporters here today, Principal Secretary Umeshchandra Sarangi and Director General (Information and Public Relations) Manisha Mhaiskar said though Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh and Deputy Chief Minister R R Patil went to Aurangabad, they could not conduct an aerial survey of the adjoining affected districts due to inclement weather conditions. Instead they held a meeting of officials there itself.

Eight helicopters, 16 army and 65 civilian boats have been deployed in the rescue operation. The personnel of tri-services have already been deployed, Mr Sarangi added.

In Marathwada region, Nanded, Hingoli, Jalna and Parbhani were the worst affected districts. The waters of the Godavari river, which was flowing at 357.1 metres yesterday, has receded following the release of water from Puchampada dam in Andhra Pradesh.

Mr Sarangi said it was necessary to release water from Jaikwadi dam and the process of releasing the water has already started.

He said Mr Deshmukh spoke with his counterpart in Andhra Pradesh about the release of water from Puchampada dam.

It would take at least two to three days for the water to reach Nanded and the administeration has taken adeuqate care to evacuate the people to safer places.
