Sensex up 1.7 per cent for the week

Mumbai, Aug 5 (UNI) The Bombay Stock Exchange Sensitive Index (Sensex) rose by 1.7 per cent as the investors re-gained their confidence and helped the Sensex breach the 11,000 mark twice, however, the momentum which continued for four days could not be sustained and the markets finally closed the last trading session in the red.

The BSE Sensex opened the week in the green and continued the steady streak before the hike in the interest rate by the Bank of England and also the firming of the crude oil price pulled the Sensex down in the negative.

The week was in for a surprise when the investors' sentiment took a U-turn after the International credit ratings agency 'Fitch Ratings' upgraded India's sovereign ratings to investment grade. The move enhanced the sentiment on the bourses and even after little tribulation the bull run continued till the last trading session.

Other indices which grew for the week were Midcap up by 1.8 per cent, smallcap grew by 3.0 per cent, Capital Goods was up by 3.6 per cent, Health sector was up by 1.7 per cent, Metals by 0.5 per cent, IT by 1.8 per cent, and Auto sector by 3.1 per cent.

Foreign Institutional Investors (FII) were the net buyers of Rs 579 crores with purchase of Rs 6,776.44 crores worth of shares in six days from July 28 to Aug 04, whereas the total sales amounted to Rs 6,196.79 crores.

The mututal funds were net sellers of Rs 166.47 crores for the five days of the week from July 28 to Aug 03, with total sales amounting to Rs 1864.48 crores and purchase equivalent to Rs 698.01 crores.

The major gainers on the index on the last day were Reliance Energy, up by 1.86 per cent to Rs 463.00, HDFC up by 1.55 per cent to Rs 1,245.25, Bajaj Auto up by 1.54 per cent to Rs 2,613.50, and BHEL which was up by 1.46 per cent to Rs 2,149.75.

Besides, major losers on the index on the last trading day were SBI, down by 2.67 per cent to Rs 807.90, Cipla down by 2.17 per cent to Rs 227.85, Reliance Industries down by 2.10 per cent to 967.40 and ITC down by 1.98 per cent to Rs 168.10.
