Rains take a break in Gujarat

Vadodara, Aug 5 (UNI) There was a respite from rains in Gujarat with only 32 talukas in the state experiencing rains today.

The highest rainfall of 87 mm during the past 24 hours was recorded in Vyara taluka in Surat district followed by Kaparada in Valsad district which experienced 64 mm rains.

According to the State Emergency Response Centre, only eight talukas experienced an inch of rainfall during the last 24 hours ended 0830 hours today. Twenty-four talukas recorded rains of 0.5 inch and less.

However, no rains were experienced in Ahmedabad, Amreli, Anand, Banaskantha, Bhavnagar, Gandhinagar, Jamnagar, Kheda, Mehsana, Patan, and Surendranagar districts.

Meanwhile, the body of Gopal Bachubhai Mali (35) who had been missing since July 30, was recovered today from a ''nullah'' in Nagarwada locality of the city. The man had drowned in the ''nullah'' during the heavy rains.

Meanwhile, a report from Surat said owing to heavy rains in the catchment areas, the water level in the Ukkai dam has risen to 335.34 ft.

The water inflow in the dam today was 61,013 cusecs today, but the danger level in Ukkai dam is much higher at 345 feet, district authorities informed.
