'Hurriyat back tracked; fails to give proposal'

Srinagar, Aug 5: Charging that the Hurriyat Conference backtracked and did not participate in the second round table conference held in May, Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad said the amalgam has failed to come up with a proposal to address the Kashmir problem.

Till now they are not in a position to come up with a concrete suggestion or proposal, Mr Azad said while concluding the discussion on security scenario in the state in the Legislative Assembly last evening.

''If opening up of the Srinagar-Muzaffarabad road, Poonch-Rawlakot route, holding of many rounds of talks with Hurriyat leaders, holding of Round Table Conferences and extending offer for trade across the LoC, are not the Confidence Building Measures (CBM) then what else could these be'', he questioned.

He said over 75 representatives of various political parties, ethnic groups, social and other organisations had taken part in the first Round Table Conference but the Hurriyat declined to participate saying that they have been informed only a week earlier and that the conference was crowded.

The Hurriyat Conference also wanted that the Prime Minister should meet them exclusively, he added.

He informed that on his suggestion the Prime Minister had announced the next Round Table giving more than three months time to the Hurriyat Conference and fixed Srinagar as its venue.

Mr Azad said he also met the Hurriyat leaders and the number of the participants was reduced to 27, even then they back tracked and refused the participate.

This indicates that there is something wrong in the botton.

''kahian No Kahian Kuch Pardha Dari Hai - Kahian Na Kahain Tarain Bajtain Hai.'' The Hurriyat Conference had told the Prime Minister that they will come up with some proposal to address the Kashmir problem but till now they are yet to present a concrete suggestion or proposal, he said.
