Fernandes calls for voting Mulayam back to power

Varanasi, Aug 5 (UNI) Former defence minister and NDA convenor George Fernandes today appealed to the Uttar Pradesh electorate to vote for Mulayam Singh Yadav-led ruling Samajwadi Party in the 2007 assembly polls.

The former defence minister's open call for supporting Mulayam, is politically significant in the light of the fact that his party -- JD(U) -- president Sharad Yadav and Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar have announced forming a front in Uttar Pradesh with Apna Dal to defeat both the SP and the BSP.

Interacting with Newspersons here, Mr Fernandes said Mulayam's win was essential for maintaining the balance of power between UPA governed Centre and Uttar Pradesh.

''I am not in support of any political party, but in the present political circumstances, it is essential that Mulayam's party is voted back to power in UP,'' Mr Fernandes maintained.

''Forming front against Mulayam may be the personal agenda of Nitish and Sharad, but not the party's,'' claimed Mr Fernandes.
