New Delhi, Aug 4: A person seeking information under the Right to Information Act can videograph the records provided to him by a government department.

The ruling was given by the Central Information Commission in a case in which one Sanjay Singh had applied to the PWD of the Delhi Government for inspection of the work on increase in the width of road from Vikas Marg Crossing (Pushta) leading to Gandhi Nagar.

The appellant had wished to see some documents related to this work at the time of inspection, and when he came for that, he wanted to videograph the whole process, but was stopped by the PWD authorities, following which, he approached the Commission.

''If an applicant wishes to make copies of records/ samples given to him for inspection at his own expenses, it is not for the Public Authority to object to the form in which the copies are being made, provided it is restricted to the information permissible under the Act, '' the Commission ruled yesterday while hearing the case.

It said there was no provision in the Act disallowing videography, and therefore, it cannot be excluded unless it violates the parameters of any information sought and agreed to be provided.
