Sudden earth smoking causes concern in Mizoram

Aizawl, Aug 4: Tension triggerd with the sudden erruption of smoke from the earth in Bawngkawn area in the capital city here today.

Initially, the residents thought a volcano was about to erupt which sent tremours of alarm through the locality but it became worse, when a stick was inserted in the hole from which the smoke came out, warm mud was found at the bottom.

Making an expert opinion about volcanos erupting in Mizoram, Geology&Mining wing joint director Dr Lallenmawia said there was no reason to believe volcanos are present in the state.

However, here is a geological plate about 65 kms below the surface here, there is no danger of volcanoes erupting. Because the core of the earth is seething inferno, heat sometimes escape to the surface. But this is a natural phenomenon and there is nothing to be worried about, he said.

After initial investigation police said that the smoke might had been caused by a short in the earthing of an electric cable buried in the ground.
