New Delhi, Aug 4 (UNI) Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit today laid the foundation stone to convert into eight lanes the six lane 8.4 km portion of the Ring Road from Ashram Chowk to Rajghat.

Describing Ring Road as the lifeline of Delhi, Ms Dikshit said her Government is keen to make the entire Ring Road and the Outer Ring Road signal-free to overcome traffic congestion.

She said the widening of the Ring Road from six to eight lanes is being executed in phases by the Public Works Department.

''The work on three phases has been completed whereas work on the fourth phase from Wazirabad to Azadpur is in progress. The fifth phase would cover Rajghat from Ashram Chowk, which would be widened within a year or so,'' she added.

The widening of the Ring Road, which is used by around one lakh vehicles during peak hours, would facilitate smooth flow of traffic and also help in checking pollution, Ms Dikshit said.

The Chief Minister reiterated that her government is committed to commission all infrastructure development works, being executed by the PWD by end of 2008, to facilitate smooth hosting of the 2010 Commonwealth Games.

Apart from large numbers of flyovers, number of Foot Over Bridges with Escalators would also be commissioned, she added.

Ms Dikshit called upon people to render cooperation in making Delhi a world-class city.

Delhi Urban Development and PWD Minister A K Walia and MLAs Tajdar Babar and Tarwinder Singh Marwah were among others who attended the event.
