Belgium ready to join UN Lebanese peace force
Brussels, Aug 4: Belgium would be willing to join a UN peacekeeping force in Lebanon if the world body decides to deploy troops after fighting ends, Prime Minister Guy Verhofstadt's spokesman said today.
''There is an agreement in principle (by the Belgian government). We would need to see exactly what the mandate of the UN peacekeeping force would be and what we could contribute,'' spokesman Didier Seeuws said.
France, seen as a potential leader of the peacekeeping force, has drawn up a draft Security Council resolution that would call for an immediate cessation of hostilities between Israel and Lebanese Hizbollah guerrillas and prepare for the deployment of an international stabilisation force.
