Intel Technologies launches 'Itanium2 processor'
Mumbai, Aug 3 (UNI) Chip giant, Intel Technologies today launched 'Itanium2 processor' a fifth generation advanced software technology used for large scale critical applications in banks and industries.
Intel also announced the addition of six Indian software companies into the 'Itanium Solutions Alliance'(ISA) here.
I-flex Solutions Ltd, Lifetree Convergence Ltd, Mithi Software Technologies Pvt Ltd, Nucleus Software Exports Ltd, Ramco Systems and Subex Azure Ltd are the newly enlisted members of the alliance in India.
ISA is a global community of hardware, operating system and application vendors dedicated to accelerating the adoption and ongoing development of Itanium2-based solutions.
Commenting on the milestone, Ramamurthy Sivakumar, Country Manager (India), Intel technologies said that all products such as desktops, laptops and other software assesories will undergo transformation at a tremendrous speed exploring new technologies.
He asserted that the new processor displays double perfomance and is theoretically capable of performing roughly eight times more work per clock cycle than other CISC and RISC architecture due to its Parallel Computing micro-architecture.
Moreover Itanium2 technology is heavily used in computer-bound super computers, and large corporate database servers, where massive parallelism and compile-time optimisations are most critical.
Sivakumar said that 76 of the world's 100 largest corporations run Itanium2-based systems. While no other processor can run on multiple flavors of Windows, Linux, Unix, BSD and VMS.
On the occasion, Intel also unveiled five new products in the Dual-Core Intel Itanium2 processor 9,000 series. Previously codenamed 'Montecito', the new processors are designed for the most sophisticated high-end computing platforms in the world. Dual-core Itanium2-based systems target areas such as business analytics, large data warehouses and HPC areas.
On January26 of this year, ISA committed to investing USD 10 billion to develop Itanium based solutions. It is driving advancement at every level, from processor and systems development to ongoing application porting, he added.
However, Montecito is one of four generations of Itanium2 processors currently on Intel's roadmap and expected to drive rapid perfomance scaling through 2010 and beyond. The other upcoming three generations are codenamed Montvale, Tukwila and Poulson.
