ID cards distributed to Lankan refugees
Karur, Tamil Nadu, Aug 3 (UNI) The Karur District Administration distributed multi-purpose identity cards, to more than 1,015 inmates of the transit camp for Sri Lankan refugees at Rayanur, near here today.
Distributing the compact identity cards, District Collector S Chandramohan said the ID cards would be helpful for the identification of the refugees and their welfare activities.
Of the total 1,336 inmates, comprising 381 families, the cards were given away for 1,015, including women above the age group of 12.
Stating that the Tamil Nadu Government had doubled the cash dole assistance to the inmates here, he said the head of the family would get a cash dole of Rs 400, against Rs 200 now, from this month.
The next adult member of the family would be eligible for Rs 288 and the first child would receive Rs 180 while Rs 90 would go as aid to other children, per month.
Stating that, eight kg of free rice for each adult and six kg for each child, were already in supply, he said basic amenities in the camp would be improved shortly.
The transit camp was set up in 1990 following heavy influx of refugees from Sri Lanka. It accommodates 1,336 refugees including 518 women now.
