Congress asks Jaswant to own up 'mistake'
New Delhi, Aug 3: The Congress today called upon Leader of the Opposition in the Rajya Sabha Jaswant Singh to confess the wrong done by him before the Chairman of the House and apologise to the people as he had made a mockery of the entire nation by making a claim of a mole in the PMO which he could not establish.
''That would be the honourable thing for him(Mr Singh) to do,'' Congress Spokesperson Jayanti Natrajan said briefing mediapersons here.
She said the US Embassy had denied the authenticity of the letter which Mr Singh had claimed was the correspondence between a US Senator and US Ambassador which spoke of nuclear secrets from the PMO leaked out to the US. Mr Singh had placed the said letter on the floor of the House and authenticated it, but both the sender and receiver of the alleged letter had denied its authenticity.
Stating that Mr Singh had made a big mockery of the security of the country, Mrs Natrajan said Mr Singh should own up his mistake which had placed the country in a very embarrassing situation. This unfortunate situation must be brought to an end immediately to save the country from further embarrassment.
''He(Singh) misled the House trying to fool the nation with grave consequences to the national security,'' she said, adding if he really had the information claimed by him, which he kept to himself for 13 years, he could have gone to the nearest police station and filed a complaint to this effect. ''Why did he keep it to himself for 13 years?'' she asked.
Replying to a question, Mrs Natrajan said the BJP should seriously ponder over the situation, the circumstances and the controversy surrounding their Leader of the Opposition in the Rajya Sabha and think what kind of image they wanted.
