UP polls after January: Mulayam

Etawah, Uttar Pradesh, Aug 2 (UNI) Dismissing all speculations about an early poll, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mulayam Singh Yadav today asserted the state would go for assembly elections only after January.

Addressing a rally at his home town of Saifai near here, Mr Yadav said since the term of his government was ending on May 13, elections could be expected anytime between February and April, 2007.

The various reports about possibility of an early poll in the state were unfounded, UP CM observed.

Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) N Gopalaswami, during his recent visit to the state capital, too had pointed that elections in Uttar Pradesh would be held before May 15 next year.

Mr Yadav also used the opportunity to slam the opposition parties for the continuous triade against his government. ''Their outburst only shows their frustration. But at the same time it is also mean to defame the government ahead of the elections,'' he said.

The Chief Minister also asked his party leaders to stay away from groupism as the elections were nearing. ''Now focus all your strength on the elections...the coming polls would be very crucial for the SP,'' he added.
