Two persons gets life imprisonment
Barrackpore, Aug 2 (UNI) Two persons, including a 50-year-old woman, were sentenced to life imprisonment today for killing a woman in August 2002.
Additional district and sessions judge of the fast track court Gurupada Mandal here, in a verdict, sentenced Usha and Somnath Bose to life impisonment for burning the woman alive.
The punishment was pronounced, along with a fine of Rs 2,000 each, or an additional imprisonment of six months under section 302 and 498 of the IPC.
The judge also held the victim's husband, 26-year old Soumen, a labourer, whom she married under Hindu Marriage Act in August, 2002, guilty under section 498 a and sentenced to three year's imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs 1,000 or additional imprisonment for three months.
Public prosecutor Koushik Chatterjee said Mita was a resident of Swadhin Palli in Baranagar and married to Soumen.
Mita's in-laws demanded Rs two lakhs from her and as she could not meet the demand, her in-laws set fire on her. She was then admitted to R G Kar Medical college on August 28.
Police had recorded Mita's statement from the hospital a day prior to her death in which the victim categorically complained against Usha and Somnath.
Altogether 31 witnesses were examined during the trials, Mr Chatterjee added.
