Top HM commander, 4 ultras among 6 killed in J

Srinagar, Aug 2: A top commander of Hizbul Mujahideen (HM) and four other militants and a soldier were killed while two others were arrested in the Jammu and Kashmir overnight, official spokesman today said.

He said two militants were killed at Tral in south Kashmir when an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) they were preparing exploded.

However, three security agencies who carried out the operation and gunned down two militants gave different versions about the encounter.

A CRPF spokesman told UNI that troops of 53 BSF, 42 RR and 54 CRPF launched a joint operation in the woods at Kamala in Tral area of south Kashmir today.

He said two militants Rashid Ahmad Bhat and Nazir Ahmad were killed when an IED they were preparing exploded.

The spokesman said massive search in the area was still going on as there are reports that three more militants are hiding in the forest area.

However, a Defence Ministry spokesman said mobile check post at Buts, Tral signalled a Tata vehicle at 0430 hours to stop. The vehicle did not stop and militants from the vehicle opened fire. The fire was returned by the security forces.

He said two militants in the vehicle started running while firing on troops.

Later, two bodies of militants were recovered from the area.

And the BSF said there was a specific information about the militant movement in village Kamal Goshu, Tral.

He said an encounter took place during the operation in which two militants, including a battalion commander of HM Irshad Ahmad alias Tufail were killed.

Security forces gunned down a miliant in an encounter in north Kashmir last night, a Defence Ministry spokesman said. He said troops on a specific information cordoned off a village at Bandipora in north Kashmir last evening to nab the militants hiding there. As the troops were about to storm a particular house, militants attacked them with automatic weapons. The fire was returned and in the encounter one militant Abdul Rashid was killed.

Two militants of Harkat-ul-Jehadi Islami (HUJI) and a soldier were killed in a fierce encounter in Doda district today, official sources said at Jammu.

They said on a specific information, security forces cordoned off village Cachall Chatru village in Kishtiwar tehsil of Doda district early today.

During the operation militants attacked the search party with automatic weapons which was retaliated by the troops resulting a fierce encounter.

In the encounter, two militants of HUJI were killed while a jawan laid down his life.

The slian ultras were identifed as Mohammad lshtiyaq alias Zakir, Tehsil commander of HUJI and Mohammad Yousuf while the jawan was identified as Jatender Singh of 11 Rashtriya Rifles, the sources said.

Two AK-56 rifles, two magazines, 19 rounds and two hand grenades were seized from the encounter site.

A naka party of the security forces arrested two militants along with arms and ammunition at Bemina, on the outskirts of the city last night.

A CRPF spokesman said a naka party during a routine search noticed a group of people moving under suspicious circumstances at Gousia colony, Bemina. When challenged and asked to stop, they tried to escape.

However, they were overpowered and later Umar Nazir Hazari and Muzaffar Amin Darzi were arrested along with one pistol, a magazine, four rounds and one hand grenade.
