TN govt has nothing to do with Lankan police training : MK

Chennai, Aug 2 (UNI) Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi today said the state government has nothing to do with the training being provided to 54 Sri Lankan Police Personnel at the CRPF Training College in Coimbatore.

Responding to Mr M Kannappan (MDMK) who demanded the training be stopped immediately, he said the state had neither invited them nor any permisson was given.

The permission was given by the Centre, he said, adding ''since you have raised the issue, I hope the Central government would take note of it,'' he added.

Earlier, raising the issue soon after the day's proceedings began, Mr Kannappan said at a time when the Sri Lankan military troops had mounted an offensive against the Eelam Tamils, how could the Centre give permission for training their police personnel in Tamil Nadu.

He said the Chief Minister must intervene to stop it, prompting an immediate reply from Mr Karunanidhi.

It may be noted that Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK) founder leader Dr S Ramadoss also demanded the Sri Lankan police personnel must be sent back immediately.

He said Tamils, not only in the state, but all over the world, believed that the Sri Lankan forces should not be provided any kind of assistance or training as they would be used to crush the Tamils in the island.
