Mechanised canoe capsizes, 8 anglers rescued

Panaji, Aug 2 (UNI) Eight fishermen were rescued by fellow anglers when a mechanised canoe capsized along the western coast at Uttorda in South Goa today.

The rescued fishermen were using the motorised canoe to fish for solar shrimps.

The Goa Fishing Boat Owners Association, meanwhile, has opposed fishing of highly-priced solar shrimps by canoes, using outboard motors of above 10 HP.

The Directorate of Fisheries, which has deployed patrol vessels to curb illegal fishing, is also engaged in checking mechanised canoes that use the banned mini purse seine nets for catching solar shrimps.
