Flood situation intensifies in Shirol tehsil

Kolhapur, Aug 2 (UNI) Flood situation in Kolhapur district's Shirol tehsil today became further grim due to excess flow of water from Sangli district into Krishna river basin.

The water level at Shirol tehsil near Kurundwad bridge on Panchaganga river increased upto 66.9 feet this afternoon from last evening's height of 66.1 feet, while the Rajapur weir near Rajapur village recorded 54.3 feet against yesterday's figure of 53 feet, Shirol tehsildar office sources said.

A total of 18 villages from tehsil have been affected. Of these, four villages have been marooned and seven others have been competely cut off connectivity through roads due to flood water, sources said.

Army jawans with boats have been deployed to carry out rescue and relief work in affected areas.

So far 14,020 people from 2,888 families have been shifted to safer places including 4,681 in 18 relief camps in the tehsil and the remaining 9,339 shifted to their relatives houses, sources informed.

Flood water has begun receeding slowly in Sangli district today whereas Sangli city, Miraj, Walva and Palus tehsils have been worst affected in the district.

At some places, the situation has improved with the resumption of road traffic.
