Flood situation grim in Gulbarga

Gulbarga, Aug 2: The flood situation in this district of Karnataka continues to be grim today, with river Bhima still in spate following heavy discharge of water from Ujjini and Veerbhatkal dams in Maharashtra after heavy rains pounded the neighbouring state.

Official sources said evacuation of people to safer places went on for the third consecutive day after authorities issued a flood alert to people living along the banks of the river.

Today, about 30 people at Mannur in Afzalpur taluk were shifted to a relief camp as flood water entered the village.

The sources said about 1.40 lakh cusecs of water were discharged from Ujjini dam. Water level in the river rose to 404 m, with 1.6 lakh cusecs of water flowing.

Government officials, including Deputy Commissioner Pankaj Kumar Pande, monitored the situation by visiting the flood-hit areas.

The inflow into the Narayanapur reservoir across river Krishna was 2.75 lakh cusecs and the same quantum of water was being discharged. However, the flood situation till evening was under control.
